Despite unrelenting resistance from the chemical industry, the vast majority of studies show that exposure to certain phthalate chemicals is associated with liver cancer, reproductive toxicity and endocrine disruption. These chemicals also are used to soften the plastic used in many children’s toys. AB 1108 (Ma) bans the use of phthalates in toys and childcare products and requires manufacturers to use the least toxic alternative when replacing phthalates.
