Citizens and Lawmakers Speak Out to Protect Water Supply

It's simply amazing. More than 950 Californians responded to our request for Letters to the Editor about the current threat to our federally-protected aquifers posed by underground waste injection wells. Protecting California’s limited groundwater is vitally important to all of us, so we expected a lot of letters – but we honestly never expected nearly 1,000 supporters would write in! It's incredibly gratifying and encouraging to see such a huge response!

As letter writers, we're in good company. Just a few days after our grassroots letter-writing campaign launched, eight environmental champions in the California State Legislature co-signed their own letter. Their letter addressed Governor Brown and echoed our calls for immediate action to protect our water supply. Here’s the story:

Lawmakers demand oil firms stop pumping waste into aquifers
By David R. Baker, San Francisco Chronicle

Eight influential California legislators urged Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday to immediately shut down nearly 2,500 wells that are injecting oil-field wastewater into aquifers that were supposed to be protected by federal law.

“The State should not wait until sources of drinking or irrigation water are polluted, especially given the dire situation that has been created by the current drought,” the legislators wrote in a letter to Brown.

These eight lawmakers are speaking out on behalf of the voters they represent, and they’re demanding that the governor and the agencies he oversees take action immediately to stop this illegal pollution of our water supply.
